CANON 1DX MARK III (MY THOUGHTS ON EACH IN ITALICS)
- New Sensor with new & improved Autofocus Speed with Accuracy, 28 times better AF resolution than 1Dx Mark II (28 times is crazy)
- Improved Dual Pixel AF across 90×100 percent of the sensor with 525 AF Areas (great for video)
- New DIGIC Processor that handles ISO better than predecessor (this will be incredible)
- 4k Video with 60p Raw 10-bit 4:2:2 C-log video record internally to DUAL CFExpress cards (incredible for video shooters teamed up with DUAL PIXEL AF)
- Brighter viewfinder with “zero lag” (taking a dig at mirrorless cameras perhaps, we hear you Canon)
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS. Faster Ethernet Data Transfer support (Oh yeah, Canon, finally you are not holding back and charging more for accessories)
- 16fps mechanical burst mode (just a couple more than before but the more the merrier)
- 20fps using mechanical or electronic shutter in live view mode (yes baby, this is the burst life)
- Same battery more juice. (great going with this, no need for buying different batteries and charging in the field between cameras)
Now they have not mentioned anything about how many megapixels this camera is going to have so at least they left something for our imaginations. The rest of the important specs are all out. I am sure it is finally time for Canon users to rejoice as these specs appear competitive and formidable with the current market of flagship cameras.
Now, on the other hand, Nikon has only teased us with a few images and a video of how great their old flagship DSLR D5 is, in their development announcement of their next flagship DSLR, The Nikon D6. However, on the bright side, they announced an incredibly exciting lens — NIKKOR 120-300MM F/2.8E FL ED SR VR TELEPHOTO ZOOM that will come out along with their next flagship. This lightweight lens will be an incredible tool to cover the 100-400 mm wildlife range which is otherwise 70-200mm 2.8 lens territory. They choose to show off their rich history of great cameras instead of learning on the specs of the next big one from their stables. So we have almost everything left still up to our imaginations and speculation until we get more information out from them.
Last but not least in any way, Sony did not waste any time releasing development announcements but were the first to already release their 2020 offering, the A9 mark 2. Now the A9 mark 2 is similar as A9 as far as most of the specs go. Better grip and ergonomics, Voice Memos, Dual UHS 2 slots and some tweaks to their AF along with 5.5 axis (instead of 5 axis in the A9) are the main feature differences. The A9 is an incredible camera in itself so there was a lot of exceeding expectations on the A9 II in terms its specs. Based on these rumours, it would have been a trend changer however Sony decided to support professional photographers more than the photo enthusiast/gearheads and this is understandable considering their aim is to penetrate into the 2020 Olympics Photographer gear bags more. So in this regard, Sony announcement could be called slightly lack lustre however I am super excited that A9 now is more affordable. A9 is a beast, no doubt on that.
So there you have it, my two cents on the upcoming flagships from the three power houses. I have not included other brands or their flagships in this discussion. I am planning to write more of these and I’d love to read your comments and thoughts on my introspect on such photography related news.
